Planning permission has been granted for the Irish Midlands' biggest retail scheme in Mullingar.
Bennett Developments' €200m Central Mullingar development will total 36,000 sq m, including 22,000 sq m of retail, 84 residential units, 645 sq m of offices, a cultural building, cinema, more than 1,400 car spaces, a medical centre, crèche, restaurants and cafés.
Mullingar-based Bennett was chosen by Westmeath County Council after a design competition to rejuvenate the Blackhall area. The open-air scheme will be an organic continuation of the existing town centre.
The developer calculates the scheme will have a catchment of 344,000 people within a 40-minute drive. Work on Central Mullingar will commence immediately with completion planned for spring 2011.
