Blueprint Projects, in conjunction with Shopping Centre, gave one lucky centre the chance to win a retail merchandise unit (RMU) with free delivery and installation for a year - a prize worth around £8,000. And the lucky winner, announced at the BCSC shopping centre management conference in Manchester earlier this month, is Suzanne Green, centre manager of the Corner House leisure and entertainment complex in Nottingham.
Opened in 2000 by BP Investment Management, the 200,000-sq ft complex is a mix of bars and restaurants, a casino and a night-club open 24/7, 364 days a year.
Like everybody else, says Green, she has been looking at ways of generating extra income from the complex. "We've been looking at commercialisation for the past six months - everything from vending machines and advertising to promotions and RMUs.
"It's a great start to win the RMU," she said. And even better for her, it won't clash with any other tenant. "It's a great idea. We could sell anything from pashminas to ice-creams. It will be a good toe in the water for me."
Essex-based Blueprint Projects designs and build a range of RMUs for shopping centres in the UK and Europe. Managing director Stephen Brooks says the company has installed over 200 units in the UK since 2004. On its stand at the BCSC conference, Blueprint was displaying the prototype of a new, modular RMU. "One size never fits all, so with this you'll be able to add to it and change it to suit your needs," said Brooks.
