Wakefield Metropolitan District Council has given the go ahead for a 100,000- sq ft extension to the Moorfield Group's Ridings shopping centre. The three-storey scheme will extend the mall onto a site between Rodney Yard and the existing service yard entrance.
At the same time Moorfield is upgrading The Ridings, and work has already started on new entrances at Cathedral Walk, Almshouse Lane and Kirkgate that will increase natural light as well as improve interaction between the centre and the public realm.
Located in Wakefield's prime retail area, The Ridings originally opened in 1983 and represents the city's principal shopping centre. Since its acquisition of the centre, Moorfield Real Estate Fund has welcomed over 20 new retailers, including Bank Fashion, T-Mobile, Sports Direct, Esquire's Café, Newspoint, mobile media company 3-Store, Partyland and Hair Express.
Moorfield director Mark Holmes said: "We anticipate that the proposed extension will not only improve the shopping experience for regular visitors, but also attract new retailers and shoppers."
