Land Securities has submitted a planning application for the £100m redevelopment of the St John's Centre, Liverpool's largest covered shopping centre. The proposed extension will increase its overall size from 360,000 to 480,000 sq ft.

In addition to the extension, the centre, which dates from 1969, will be subject to an extensive refurbishment. The new design incorporates a double-height retail mall which will add a further 90,000 sq ft of retail space, attracting new retailers and restabilising its position as a value/mid market shopping centre. At the same time the established food offer will be relocated to a new catering area at the first-floor level overlooking Clayton Square. The historic St John's Market will also be relocated to a purpose-built Market Hall in Williamson Square.

Land Securities has already been granted planning permission for the UK's largest media wall, situated in a prime location opposite the busy Liverpool Lime Street Railway Station. The media wall is due for completion in late spring 2008, and the extension is expected to open in spring 2012.
