Sky is to further expand its retail network after reaching a new agreement with Land Securities. The deal came as Sky opened its 170th retail outlet, further consolidating its position as the largest operator of mall units in the UK.
The deal will make Sky the exclusive retailer of entertainment and communication services on the concourses of all of Land Securities' flagship shopping centres, which include St Davids in Cardiff; White Rose in Leeds and St John in Liverpool. It represents the latest expansion in Sky’s store network, which began with the acquisition of independent retailer You Me TV and its 59 stores in July 2006. Following on from the Land Securities deal it is expected that the total number of Sky stores will rise from 170 to 250 before the Summer of 2008.
The units provide a showcase for Sky products and services, and are equipped with multimedia plasma screens and live digital satellite feeds. “Retail stores are an increasingly important part of our marketing capability, delivering an engaging experience for consumers who value face-to-face contact. Their success is demonstrated not only by the number but by the quality of customers joining Sky in this way,” said William Mellis, director of customer acquisition at BSkyB.
In addition to Land Securities, Sky has exclusive agreements in place with a number of the UK’s major shopping centre owners, including Westfield, Capital Shopping Centres, The Mall, Prudential, Lend Lease and British Land.
