Sheffield's Meadowhall Centre was the proud winner of the new SCEPTRE Award for Environmental Management, sponsored by Envirowise. The centre received the award for its innovative and environmentally-friendly handling of shopfit waste.
Recognising the considerable recycling potential for shopfit waste, which is generated on a regular basis, the centre introduced a recycling scheme in July 2006. The result is that now a remarkable 73 per cent of all waste generated is being recycled.
A site-managed approach means that the processing of materials is controlled, safe and extremely cost effective. All construction materials are taken by skip to a local facility where they are segregated by type. The hardcore is crushed for resale as a secondary roadbase material. The various metals are sorted, sized and baled before being processed for individual markets. Timber waste is processed for the board manufacturing industry and also for animal bedding, and even sawdust is made into pellets for sale as a fuel for eco-friendly boilers.
Plastics, polythene and hessian sacks are all recycled within the UK. Finally, the dirt and dust extracted from the waste is converted into a product that is used as a soil substitute for engineering purposes on landfill sites.
