Hammerson and Morley have submitted a planning application to Peterborough City Council for a 730,000-sq ft retail, entertainment and leisure quarter in the North Westgate area of Peterborough city centre.

Designed by Benoy, the mixed-use scheme sited next to the existing Queensgate Centre takes the form of a series of pedestrianised streets and squares, landmark buildings, with new links to the wider city. At the same time the Queensgate Centre is to be extensively modernised. When completed, the development will form a single destination of over 1.6 million sq ft.

The proposals include a new retailing street providing 320,000 sq ft of double-height accommodation in 50 shop units and five large flagship stores covered by a dramatic glass roof; a 160,000-sq ft department store for Marks & Spencer; a second anchor store of 65,000 sq ft; 70,000 sq ft of cafés and restaurants centred around Westgate Church in a new city square; a 48,000-sq ft multi-screen cinema; an hotel; over 100 apartments; 3,300 parking spaces and a new bus interchange.

Subject to planning consent, construction could begin in 2009, with completion scheduled for 2013.
