Enoch buys car park

Ivanhoe Cambridge, the Canadian owner and manager of Glasgow's St Enoch Centre, has concluded a £10m deal with Glasgow City Council to acquire the scheme's car park.

The lease on the car park, which is on seven levels and accommodates 750 spaces for shoppers, has been purchased by the centre's owner from the council which acquired it when the facility first opened in 1989.

A major upgrading of the car park is now planned as part of the ongoing £100m refurbishment of the centre. Construction work on the project began last month and will see a major transformation of the centre, expanding it to more than one million sq ft of retail and leisure space, including more than 40 new retailers.

Susan Nicol, general manager of the St Enoch Centre, said: "The acquisition of the car park is an important part of our overall development plan for the centre.

"Clearly, the provision of quality parking facilities is a key consideration for shoppers and other visitors to the city centre.

"We are fortunate in having such an extensive car parking area adjoining our mall and we will now be implementing a comprehensive programme of upgrading works including new flooring, enhanced lighting and general repairs.

"We want to ensure that the facility offers the best possible, customer-friendly service and fits in with the extensive upgrading we have planned for the mall itself."

Councillor George Ryan, Glasgow City Council's executive member for development and regeneration services said: "This is fantastic news for Glasgow City Council and citizens and visitors. Everyone is going to benefit from a bigger and better St Enoch Centre, which will involve a more enjoyable shopping and leisure experience, with spacious and modern parking facilities."
