British Land and Schroders’ Hercules Unit Trust has submitted detailed plans for the partial redevelopment of Fort Kinnaird, its 560,000-sq ft retail and leisure scheme in Edinburgh. The works are designed to improve the parks enviromental, as well as its investment, performance.
A number of retail units predominantly on the site of the old tea factory will be redeveloped, as will the cinema which Odeon has recently announced is to close. In addition a number of new restaurants will be spread throughout the shopping park. At the centre of the scheme a new children’s play area will be created, along with an adjacent café.
As part of the green proposals, facilities for bus travel will be significantly improved. And physical changes will include the introduction of rainwater harvesting; a 15m wind turbine to meet part of the parks electrical requirements and solar panels to provide heating for the new washroom facilities.
Mark Stirling, director at British Land Property Advisers, said: “Our investment throughout Fort Kinnaird will significantly enhance the park’s facilities and improve the shopping experience for visitors to the scheme. By investing in mechanisms to deliver sustainable energy we will help to both reduce long term costs for our tenants, as well as the burden placed on the local environment.”
Fort Kinnaird Shopping Park currently provides over 560,000 sq ft of accommodation in more than 52 retail units. Current tenants include Argos, Boots, Borders, Currys, Early Learning Centre, Gap, H & M Hennes, HMV, JD Sports, Marks & Spencer, Next, Pizza Hut, Toys 'R' Us, Wallis, WH Smith, New Look and Vision Express.
