In a constantly changing and evolving market, new security products continue to make life easier for shopping centre managers and their security teams.

CCTV expert G1 has launched a new Carbon Digital CCTV recording system, which is easy to use, fully scalable and aimed squarely at the needs of modern shopping facilities.

The Carbon Digital is a combination of IP-based video recording hardware which requires no PC intervention; compact, high-security RAID storage media; and G1's Carbon Data software package. It has been designed specifically for high footfall areas such as shopping centres, and one of the key design criteria has been reliability.

With intelligent motion detection features the system can also alert operators to possible incidents and the images and video can be automatically routed to any IP address on the network.

In addition, recording will still continue if the PC workstations on the network are switched off - eliminating the PC from the critical path of video recording.

Director of G1 Chris Best says: "With Carbon Digital, shopping centre managers finally get a CCTV recording system that is directly tailored to their needs. The system is the result of our years of experience working as a security systems integrator for the shopping centre sector, and has been designed with the simple goal of making shopping centres more secure places to visit and run.

"We have already installed a number of Carbon Digital systems and they total more than 500 cameras recording. With the cost of data storage coming down all the time, we are able to offer our clients true system reliability and quality with high frame rate recording at a competitive cost."

A new public address facility that allows CCTV operatives to talk directly to members of the public who are contravening laws has recently been launched.

Complus Teltronic supplies the talking part of the system, which is currently in place in towns and cities such as Middlesborough, West Bromwich, Manchester and Nottingham. The Talking CCTV Cameras are being used to request people to pick up litter and to help in crime prevention and public safety, for example to warn people they are being watched by CCTV.

Marketing executive at Complus Teltronic Suzanne Kenneally says: "The government has given a grant for all the different boroughs to invest in talking cameras.

"The system can be rolled out across the whole town - anywhere there is a CCTV system in operation and if there aren't any then CCTV can be installed.

"It's about an embarrassing tactic. The first contact is always polite, such as 'you are being disruptive, move along', the second is more authoritative and then comes the warning that the police are on their way."

Drax (UK) has recently launched Connect - a highly versatile critical event management system that provides a total solution to the management and control of one or more alarm systems.

Connect provides the ideal way to centralise alarms, view critical events, process information, maintain secure system logs and integrate the new or legacy systems for single or multiple site operations. These systems often include fire, intruder alarm, access control, CCTV, medical alarms, lighting and BMS.

Connect can be used to integrate stand-alone systems into one straightforward, manageable and convenient system without compromising individual system integrity. As well as delivering alarm information, it also records other system events and faults, allowing the generation of detailed reports.

Alex Cother of Drax (UK) says: "The benefits of fully integrating systems, centralising control and monitoring include greater safety, security and efficiency, reduced staff costs and training requirements, and improved data throughput and recording.

"Furthermore, substantial cost savings can be made over the life cycle of a building by taking an integrated approach."

Public address and voice alarm technology from Bosch Security Systems has been selected by Advance Integrated Systems for the new Drake Circus shopping centre in Plymouth.

The proven Praesideo technology - the world's first fully digital public address and emergency sound system - was chosen for its high output power and ability to be configured for many different zones, making it ideal for a shopping centre environment.

In addition AIS has chosen technology from Bosch's CCTV range, including EnviroDome for outdoor surveillance and FlexiDome XT, which is an impact resistant dome camera. Both have innovative motion tracking capability AutoTrack, and VIP-X encoders to enable images to be transmitted over IP.

At the front end is Bosch's VIDOS Video Management System, specifically designed for IP-based CCTV surveillance installations, and next-generation Network Video Recorders.

Steve McCay, AIS' sales and technical director, says: "We chose Bosch Security Systems because of the quality of its product technology, and its reliability. We were one of the first installers of Praesideo when it originally came to market, and in terms of functionality, it's miles ahead of anything else that's available."
