Taoiseach Bertie Ahern visited Gallico's Athlone Town Centre site for its topping-out ceremony and confirmed that Marks & Spencer is to anchor the ?500m mixed-use project. On completion this autumn, it will be the biggest centre to open in Ireland this year.
Pictured with Gallico director Jim Keane (left) and M&S area manager Jim McNicholas (centre), the Irish premier said it will be a "very welcome boost" to the area.
He added: "In the past, Athlone has experienced urban decline but I am delighted to see that this new development is part of a major reversal of that trend. The council has been deeply committed to the regeneration and has led by example through the development of its award-winning civic offices."
