The first plan, by a consortium of Tralee landowners and developers, led by John Casey and Seamus O'Halloran,is for the GAA grounds in Tralee, which cover 4.45ha. The deal would mean a land swap with the county Gaelic Athletic Association headquarters moving to a new stadium on a greenfield site.

Few concrete details have emerged yet of the planned new centre, but it will have a substantial retail element including several anchor stores, with about 2,000 underground parking spaces.

The other big scheme for Tralee is costed at E100m and is for a site in Edward Street in the centre of the town. The proposal, for the Station Quarter development, is by the 3G group, a development partnership led by the Cork based Kelleher family. It will include three storeys over basement and underground parking for 300 cars. As well as retail, this plan includes restaurants, offices and medical units.

While these two proposals are under active consideration,a plan by Marks & Spencer to open a E6m, 2,700-sq m retail outlet at the Manor Park retail park on the outskirts of Tralee, has been turned down by Tralee town council. M&S says that it's unwilling to consider any other location in Tralee and it's felt locally that it may open up instead in the rival Co Kerry town of Killarney.
