Capital Shopping Centres has been given approval for the extension and partial redevelopment of the Westgate shopping centre in Oxford. Oxford City Council's decision marks the end of a decade-long battle by CSC and its development partner LaSalle Investment Management to extend the centre.
The new £320m scheme will create a 750,000 sq ft retail destination anchored by a John Lewis store. There will be 90 new shops, bars, restaurants and cafes. The project will be broken up into individual buildings around two new pedestrianised cross streets, fully integrating the new shopping area with the city centre. In addition the site will have 127 apartments and more than 1,200 car parking spaces.
Speaking on behalf of The Westgate Partnership, CSC's development director Richard Cable said: "This is excellent news. We are now focused on the delivery of this exciting project and will be in a position to appoint a main contractor within the next few months. Enabling works, including further archaeological surveys and service diversions, will be undertaken during the second half of this year and work on the main contract will start at some stage in 2008."
