As part of the BCSC Study Tour, I was fortunate enough to take a colleague from Gunwharf Quays, in my view one of the best mixed-use developments in the UK, to dinner at the Mall of the Emirates.
The restaurant, located on an upper level behind the Kempinski Hotel, over-looking the ski slope, is an authentic Lebanese experience. Testament to that was the basket of vegetables delivered promptly to the table once we had ordered.
We started with a Meze of Hummus, Shanklish and grilled Halloumi, all beautifully spiced and flavoured and served with fantastic fresh pitta (the puffy kind). We then followed that with Shishtouk - fantastic spiced meat kebabs with spicy potatoes and various selections from the vegetable basket. Strangely, for this type of restaurant, we chose a very pleasant bottle of Châteauneuf du Pape and still water. The tolerant Dubai market makes eating and drinking out a real pleasure! Finally we followed up with very strong coffee to complete an exceptional meal experience.
The total bill was 745 UAE Dirhams, just over £100 sterling. However 515 UAE Dirhams of the bill was composed of our wine, just over £71. The food was just £16 per head! I would also point out that a similar bottle of wine, in the UK, would have been no more than £30. Tolerance at a price.
This restaurant and the immediate surroundings sums up Dubai at the moment. If you have the money, anything is possible, and if you supply cranes or concrete, you can afford to dine out every night!
