An additional 500 car parking spaces are set to be provided at Chelmsley Wood shopping centre in North Solihull as part of a major multi-million-pound redevelopment in the town.
The plans include a new Asda store bolted onto the centre, a new feature west entrance to the scheme, mall refurbishment, new retail units, reconfiguration of the road layout around Chelmsley Wood town centre, a new bus interchange and a new car park, providing approximately 500 spaces for the shopping centre and new food store. New civic and office space is also planned.
Works started on site at the end of February and the programme of construction will be in excess of three years.
Chris Wyman, director of the Fordgate Group, the centre owners, with responsibility for the scheme, said: "For the bulk - the food store and the new car park and a large proportion of the highways work - we are looking at a two-year timetable."
The existing multi-storey car park at the northern end of the scheme has been subject to ongoing refurbishment for years.
Wyman added: "We have no plans to carry out works within this programme of refurbishment but, as with car parks generally, it is subject to ongoing improvements."
Wates Construction has been appointed as the main contractor for the redevelopment.
