Lend Lease has secured a resolution to grant planning permission from Dartford Borough Council to extend Bluewater with a 56,000 sq ft exhibition and events venue. Construction is expected to start in mid 2007, with a completion in late 2008.
Peter Allwood, Lend Lease's head of fund and asset management, said: "An events venue within a retail destination is a first in the UK. The events and exhibitions that will run at the venue will add a whole new dimension to the guest experience at Bluewater, bringing events that would normally require travel into central London directly to the shoppers.
"The development also opens up great opportunities for the retailers at Bluewater, and offers the potential for Bluewater to raise the game yet again, in providing a retail and leisure offer unsurpassed anywhere in the UK."
The proposal includes reconfiguring existing areas of the Water Circus, enhancing the casual dining and public space to provide more seats to complement Bluewater's existing food and catering offer. The development will be integrated into the existing centre, and will be directly accessed off Thames Walk, through the Water Circus.
Bluewater, now entering its eighth year, was co-winner of the "Best Established Centre" category at last week's BCSC Gold awards.
