The award was presented at Kensington Roof Gardens by leading botanist Professor David Bellamy, on behalf of The Green Organisation, an independent international environment group dedicated to promoting environmental best practice around the world.

The award recognised the 12-month Port Solent Goes Green project that reduced utilities consumption, waste levels and materials use as well as monitoring wildlife activity. By every measure The Boardwalk showed a steady year-on-year improvement.

The Boardwalk is managed by CBRE on behalf of the Unilever Pension Fund, and centre manager John Holt said: "We are delighted to have been one of the only shopping and leisure schemes in the country singled out for our environmental practices in this way, as it's a responsibility that we take very seriously."

He continued: "Being green isn't always the easiest option or the most cost effective in the short term, but we believe in looking forward and are determined to show others that a site as large as ours can make a difference to the environment."
