Retailing is Galway, the dominant centre in the west of Ireland, is set for a transformation with three big retail schemes in the pipeline.
Local developers Thomas Considine and Paddy Sweeney already have 16,000 sq m under construction on Tuam Road with completion due by early 2007.
But now they face competition from another local consortium, led by Stephen Harris, Walter King and Bernard McKeown, which has applied for planning permission for a E400m development on the 5ha Crown Controls site.
The proposal includes just over 26,000 sq m of retail, as well as residential, offices and an hotel, all grouped round a civic square. The developers hope that building will start in the first quarter of 2007, with completion two years later.
At the same time Moritz Holding has won a revised consent for the GalwayWest mixed-use development which includes 20,000 sq m of retail anchored by Dunne's Stores. Completion is due in Summer 2007.
