Sam & Maxie's

Sam & Maxie's is the latest addition to the foodservice line up at Stevenage Leisure Park in Hertfordshire. The new concept, opened for three weeks, combines a bar, grill and smokehouse offer, and is the latest, organically grown addition to the portfolio of the restaurant operator, La Tasca.

Although not strictly a shopping centre business (the development DNA for Sam & Maxie's consists of leisure venues that typically contain a cinema, bowling alley and fitness club) the success of La Tasca made it worthy of a viewing, so a colleague and I went to investigate the new premium casual dining offer. Competition on site is stiff for the casual dining pound, with Frankie & Benny's, Aroma, Pizza Hut and a soon-to-open Outback Steakhouse forming part of the foodservice line up.

Initial impressions of the unit are excellent with white clothed tables, booth seating and mood lighting creating a classic contemporary feel. Adjacent to the main seating area is a private, but open plan, dining room. Nice touch, great for parties and business lunches without feeling too remote.

Staff are attentive, professional and observant and nothing appeared to be too much trouble. The menu is focused and offers a good selection of items to a varied clientele, with the signature dishes of Sam's Smokin' Mains proving popular with other diners. I opted for the Duck Rosti's (£4.45), which were full of flavour and packed a tangy kick from the soy and ginger dipping sauce. Main course choice was Rib Eye Steak (£12.65), which, although ordered as medium rare, arrived more medium. The quality of meat however, prime and full flavoured, more than made up for this oversight.

Overall, a good pilot site and a strong foundation to jockey for position in the increasingly competitive premium casual dining market.
