The new Chapelfield shopping centre has helped push Norwich into the top 10 UK destinations, according to Caci's annual Retail Footprint ranking. The city is now ranked eighth in the national hierarchy.
The impact of new development can also be seen in Maidstone, which jumped eight places from 67 to 59 thanks to the new Fremlin Walk development. And Hemel Hempstead has experienced even greater change, moving up 13 places to 132 following the opening of the new Riverside shopping complex which included the town's first department store.
London's West End remains the number one retail destination and the top seven remain unchanged. But Liverpool drops from eighth to ninth, Newcastle-upon Tyne falls from ninth to tenth and Reading drops two places from tenth to twelfth in the rankings.
Looking to 2008, new developments will create a shift in shopping patternand the opening of Liverpool One will see the city climbing to fifth position. Speaking of 2008, Ian Thurman, head of CACI's location planning group, said: "White City will be a new entry into the top 10, while for the first time ever Newcastle-upon-Tyne will drop out of the top ranks."
