Lend Lease is to build a shopping centre of between 750,000 and 1 million sq ft in Stockport which will open towards the end of the decade. Working with the council, Cushman & Wakefield selected the developer to work up a mixed-use scheme from the masterplan it put together last year with BDP. Dubbed the "Bridgefield project", the project will add to the town's current 538,000 sq ft of retail provision.
Lend Lease has assembled a team that includes architect Terry Farrell and Peter Drummond, BDP chief executive, whose office was responsible for preparing the council's £500m regeneration project "Future Stockport".
Alistair Parker, partner at Cushman & Wakefield, said: "Lend Lease tabled a clear transformational vision for Stockport as a city of the future - one where Stockport town centre would become a real place for new jobs, new homes, new retail and new living."
The news follows the announcement made by Lend Lease last month that it had acquired a 75 per cent interest in the 150,000 sq ft Meadows centre in Chelmsford, Essex, which is located in a major growth region 35 miles north-east of Central London. Lend Lease acquired its stake from Liverpool Victoria Friendly Society for £60m.
Liverpool Victoria will retain the remaining 25 per cent share. Lend Lease will undertake all development, asset and property management of the centre.
Lend Lease is stepping up its UK development programme again, and Golden Square in Warrington is due for completion in 2007.
