Coverpoint's Jonathan Doughty serves up his regular shopping centre food review. This month he visits The Oriental at The Mailbox in Birmingham

It was a cold, wet, snowy Thursday and I found myself Canalside at The Mailbox, Birmingham: an upmarket retail destination which boasts a strong and varied catering offer.

The Oriental, the latest addition to the Tin Tin Group of Restaurants' portfolio, has opened in Birmingham and I went to see how good and how authentic the Thai and Malaysian food really was.

Spending a lot of time in the East has taught me a lot about these cuisines. The Oriental did not disappoint: it was the best Tom Yum soup with prawns I have ever tasted; the best Nasi Goreng I have ever tasted and the best Kari Kambling (spicy Malaysian lamb curry) I have ever tasted.

The total bill, with drinks, of £17 per head, is a small price to pay for such excellence.

The décor may not be to everyone's taste, but it is certainly memorable. The food is exemplary and the service, without doubt, the best I have ever received in the UK.

This is the first five-star review ever for this column and it is in no small part down to head chef Peter Kay. That's not the comedian, by the way: it's the one that used to work at Hakkasan, the ultra chic London pinnacle of Alan Yau's empire.

Simply outstanding!
