Trafford’s sweet celebration

A budding young cake-maker from Manchester has triumphed in the biggest commission of her career so far – a spectacular 15th birthday cake for intu Trafford Centre in the shape of a dress.
Zara Neild, 28, took five days to create the life-sized couture creation. The bespoke design was inspired by the September 2004 cover of Vogue magazine – part of a birthday exhibition of Vogue covers at the centre called “15 Years of Style”.
Zara used 150 eggs, 25 kilos of flour, 15 kilos of sugar paste, and 400 edible pearls all applied by hand. The cake, which will serve more than 400 people, is completely edible and flavoured with chocolate, strawberry, vanilla and lemon, and will be sliced and shared amongst intu staff as a birthday treat.
The cake-dress was the centre-piece of the 15 Years of Giving event, where dozens of local charity partners, supported by intu Trafford over the years, gathered to mark the occasion.
