Local Data Company: 10pc of retailers shut up shop in 2009

Published:  25 November, 2009

New figures from the Local Data Company show that 10 per cent of retailers closed between January and September this year. Out of 251,472 companies across more than 700 centres in the UK, 25,000 closed. Just under a third of these were London-based firms.

The British Property Federation (BPF) has called for greater government help to support retailers, including cutting service charge costs and make leases more transparent. The figures come months ahead of a planned increase in business rates which will put extra pressure on to tenants.
