Footfall falls
Published: 26 June, 2009
UK shopper numbers fell by 3.7 per cent year-on-year in April 2009 according to Experian’s FootFall Index, with the largest falls in Scotland, Wales and London.
However, it is a mixed picture across the retail sector and there are tentative signs of stabilisation even though activity and consumer sentiment remain depressed.
Experian also points out that the year-on-year comparison was distorted by the timing of Easter, which this year fell in April as opposed to last year when it fell in March. The warm April will also have had a negative impact on retail footfall, whereas April 2008 was very wet and cold and encouraged more people into the shelter of retail destinations. The pattern follows a very similar trend to that in April 2007 when the UK witnessed a mini heat wave.
Surprisingly, given the depressed housing market, retail parks outperformed high streets as shoppers concentrate on home essentials, DIY and gardening. The Experian Retail Park FootFall Index reported a year-on-year fall of only 1.1 per cent during the month.
