Management at the West 12 shopping centre – the other mall in London’s Shepherds Bush – is celebrating winning not just one but two categories in the annual ‘Loo of the Year Awards’.
The public toilets in the mall were given an overall grade of four stars, and the centre’s Halina Cieslinska was presented with the ‘Attendant of the Year Award’ for providing a high level of commitment to a vital public service.
Jason King, centre manager at West 12, said: “Our toilets are staffed by a brilliant team who fully deserve the award. There were over 1,700 entries nationwide, so we are delighted to have achieved such success.”

West 12’s public conveniences were opened in November 2007. “Before this Shepherd’s Bush suffered from a distinct lack of public toilets, so they were built to satisfy a local requirement,” explained King. “The facilities have been fitted out with the best quality appliances and to ensure we help the environment as much as possible, we have a water control system and speed hand-driers rather than paper towels.”
The Loo of the Year Awards were established in 1987. Each entry receives an unannounced visit from an authorised inspector who assesses the toilets against a wide range of judging criteria including signage, decor, fixtures and fittings, cleanliness and management. The report on West 12 said: “The standards of cleaning and maintenance are very high.”
