Braehead's tin man

Published:  30 September, 2008

Six-year-old Hollie Campbell from Barrhead couldn't believe her eyes when she bumped into a giant sculpture made from recycled junk in the middle of the Braehead shopping centre near Glasgow.

The eight-feet-high statue is based on an image of an environmentally aware shopper and was created to promote recycling and an awareness of the environment. Two professional artists - Glasgow-based Douglas Morland and Sheena Beaton - built the statue with the help of youngsters taking part in recycling art workshops in the mall.

The giant sculpture was put on display at Braehead as part of the shopping centre's summer of Go Green events, which includes exhibitions and interactive displays on reducing your carbon footprint and how to save on rising energy costs in the home.

Marketing manager, Lydia Young said: "Everyone has had a lot of fun creating the sculpture while, at the same time, getting the message across about the need to recycle and be more environmentally aware."
