Adamstown ahoy

Published:  18 February, 2008

Joe O'Reilly's Castlethorn Construction has unveiled its latest mega-development, Adamstown Central, in western Dublin. Adamstown is being created as a totally new town that's expected to have 30,000 inhabitants by 2015, the same size as present day Drogheda or Dundalk.

The first houses at Adamstown were sold just two years ago. The company says that when it's completed, Adamstown will be the first new town in 21st century Ireland, with 10,000 new homes.

Adamstown Central is being designed by no fewer than seven architectural practices and it draws on European influences, including French Bastide settlements.

It will provide close to 30,000 sq m of retail and commercial space, as well as a range of leisure and civic amenities, including a theatre, a cinema, a library, restaurants, bars, a fitness centre and a primary healthcare centre.

A number of distinct quarters are being planned, including one for fashion and another for food retailing. It's expected that 60 retail units will be on offer in the 8ha development. The planning application for the project was submitted to South Dublin County Council recently.
