Rats run riot on Leicester park

An East Midlands retail park has declared war...on the local rats.

Leicester City Council has told The Junction - manager of St George's Retail Park - to get rid of the rodents by carrying out a string of improvements, or else face an enforcement notice.

Shoppers have inundated the council with complaints about what several are calling a 'rat infestation.' Shopper Ann Graham says the rodents are running around in the bushes, while 21-year-old Emma-Louise Dayman saw one close to the KFC outlet: "It was disgusting. I saw one while I was eating my lunch and I could see more in the bushes."

The park management has been told it must cut back foliage, examine the drains and put down rat treatment. A Leicester City Council spokesman said: "If the work isn't carried out we can issue an enforcement notice. If that deadline is not met we could do the work ourselves and charge the site managers."

The Junction's head of operations, Peter Collinson, said the company was working closely with the council.
