A rival for Athlone in Co Westmeath
Published: 05 November, 2007
Mullingar, Co Westmeath, is due to get a major new scheme, with a large element of retail, that will rival the Athlone Town Centre.
The €200m mixed use development at Blackhall and Bleachyard, Mullingar, which is being promoted by Rickaton Construction, is currently under appeal and a decision is due just before Christmas. If favourable, construction work should start soon afterwards.
The Rickaton scheme will include 58 retail units with several large anchors. It will also have residential, office, leisure and cultural elements, as well as medical facilities. The plans are being appealed by eight local parties.
The directors of Rickaton include Christopher and John Bennett, of Bennett Construction, a big local construction firm. If they get the go-ahead from the planning appeals board, the new centre will take up to three years to build.
Meanwhile, also in Mullingar, Marks & Spencer and New Look, the fashion chain, are set to open units very shortly in the Fair Green shopping centre. Marks & Spencer's new Mullingar outlet will include men's and women's fashions, a food hall and a café. It will also be larger than the Marks & Spencer outlet in the newly opened Athlone Town Centre.
