Eastgate 'Bikeathon' raises £4,500 for charity

Published:  14 September, 2007

Staff from British Land's Eastgate shopping centre in Basildon demonstrated their physical and mental endurance skills by completing a charity bikeathon to support the Touching Tiny Minds Appeal on behalf of Action Medical Research.

The 'Eastgate Bikeathon' coincided with Action Medical Research's 2007 London to Paris Sponsored Bike Ride - a four-day event covering the 300-mile course, timed to coincide with the world-famous cycling event, the Tour de France.

Determined not to miss out on the fun, the Eastgate team - including general manager Hans Wustefeld - decided to organise their own four-day charity event and cycle 304 miles (the exact distance from Basildon to Paris) on stationary bikes positioned in the Eastgate shopping mall. The team reached their target distance after just two days but continued cycling and collecting donations for the charity. The Eastgate cyclists clocked-up an incredible 1,066 miles, raising £4,500 for the appeal.
