Marooned at the Metro

Published:  10 September, 2007

Being 'shipwrecked' in a shopping centre may sound like a dream to most women, but five shoppers at MetroCentre endured a gruelling five days and four nights on the Gateshead centre's very own desert island in a bid to win the holiday of a lifetime.

Hairdresser Cheryl Roberts walked away with a trip for two to Mauritius and £500 spending money after being crowned 'Shipwrecked Survivor' in front of an excited crowd at MetroCentre. She survived living on the desert island in the heart of the centre for the duration with four other islanders, Rachel Cairns, Jonathan Dunn, Richard Frayne and Dave Young.

During the week islanders were tasked with day-to-day challenges and went all out to generate the most votes in order to win the luxury holiday to the island paradise. They survived on little more than bread and water, though success in a challenge won an evening meal. Throughout the week shoppers voted for their favourite islander and the lead changed hands on many occasions, making Friday's live final a tense and very exciting event for everyone.

Cheryl said: "I really didn't know which way the voting was going to go, it kept changing all week. I'm so excited and am really looking forward to the holiday. I don't think I'll believe it until I'm on the plane!"
