Discount fashion retailer TK Maxx is to anchor the new Wembley Central Shopping Centre, a £60m regeneration project by St Modwen Properties and Rotch Property Group. The UK arm of US fashion giant TJX has agreed to take 31,000 sq ft at first floor level with a prominent ground floor glazed entrance and escalators providing access to the sales floor. It will anchor the 138,000-sq ft retail and leisure element of the scheme, which will also include 23,000 sq ft of offices and 235 residential apartments including 85 affordable homes.
Other retailers already committed to the scheme include Somerfield, Iceland, Holland & Barrett and Totesport and the developers report that other high street fashion brands are currently progressing deals to take space in the centre.
Patrick Turnbull, vice president of property at TK Maxx, said: “Wembley Central is a great location for TK Maxx with its dense population catchment and excellent transport links. Already a vibrant environment, the regeneration of the town centre with new shops, apartments and public space will make this a very busy shopping destination.”
And St Modwen development surveyor Killian Morris said: “Land acquisitions are almost complete albeit a compulsory purchase order is being used as a fail safe to secure the last couple of occupational interests that will form part of the scheme’s public square. Notwithstanding this, we have committed to the commencement of construction of the affordable housing and our target date for completion of the remainder of the development is Autumn 2008.”
