Kingsgate set for extension

WD (Huddersfield) has unveiled plans to extend its 300,000 sq ft Kingsgate Centre in Huddersfield by 50 per cent in order to accommodate more retail plus an 80-bedroom hotel.

The centre opened in 2002 and it has been so successful that WD is now preparing a planning application for a further 120,000 sq ft net of retail space. The company is already in detailed talks with a major anchor store and a number of major fashion retailers which would account for around 70 per cent of intended new extension space.

Managing director Peter Everest said: "Huddersfield must take account of the considerable gains it has made in the last five years along with the challenges it faces from retail-led regeneration now on-going in nearby locations. The Kingsgate Phase 2 proposal gives Huddersfield a chance to cohesively increase its retailing offer without becoming overextended."

If the plans are approved work could start in 2008 for opening in 2010. Letting agents are Brian Oakwell & Co, King Sturge and Rees Denton.
