Major works under way at The Square

Published:  10 November, 2006

Major developments are under way for The Square shopping centre in Tallaght, Dublin, which was opened in 1990, as one of the first of the new generation shopping centres in the Republic. Currently, it has 53,000 sq m of retailing space and gets more than 19m shoppers a year.

The centre is owned by Noel Smyth's Alburn company and work is getting under way on an extension for an additional 60,385 sq m of retailing space, as well as offices, new leisure and restaurant facilities and 800 apartments. The first stage of the extension will see a new 3,450 sq m purpose-built store for Penneys.

Initial work will involve extending the North Mall of the existing centre, to give about 14,000 sq m of extra space. This will include a major new two-level anchor store and 1,393 sq m of extra convenience retailing space.

DTZ Sherry FitzGerald has just been appointed the sole letting agent for the extension to The Square. Retail director Karl Stewart said that when completed, it will be one of the most significant retail developments in Ireland.

Ultimately, the whole redevelopment in and around The Square could cost up to E600m.

It's a sign of rapidly changing times in Tallaght that Marks & Spencer is to open a 3,700 sq m outlet, next month, in the Glasshouse development adjacent to The Square shopping centre. Its retail offering will include clothes for men, women and children, food, gifts and a Café Revive.
